Housewarming Ideas

You are all moved in, or maybe you just finished some spectacular renovations. Either way, it's time to celebrate! Open your doors and show off, just a little, because you know your friends, family and neighbors are dying to see what you've done with the place. Here is how to throw a housewarming party as stylish as you are.

Planning

First, decide who to invite to your event. There are different options depending on how big or small you go.

  • For a smaller event you may want to have a sit down dinner, or brunch. In this case, have them come before the food is ready so that you can give them the grand tour.
  • For a larger event you may want to go with an open-house style event. You can leave the door propped open or have someone near the door to welcome guests in and offer them a tour once they are settled.
  • If the weather is fine and you have a great outdoor space, perhaps you want to have a barbecue and invite people to mingle outside. Just make sure there is someone available to give the tour!

Invites

Every great party starts with a great invite. An invitation not only tells your guests they are invited but gives them a window into what they can expect. If your event is a sit-down dinner you will want to give them a specific arrival time and if it's an open-house you can let them know that they can show up anytime within a certain range. Here are a few invite ideas:

  • If you are the creative, do-it-yourself type, then get crafty. House shaped cards, cards with key holes cut out of the front, cards made from a paint chip, typed on an old typewriter, and floral stencil designs are just a few of the tasteful possibilities.
  • E-invites are quick and easy and can be tailored to suit your personal style. There are a number of searchable options.
  • Purchased cards are a good option if you don't have time or desire to make something but you still want to have something to slip into a neighbor’s mailbox or hand to someone at the office.

Food and Beverages

Let's face it, when we go to a house-warming we expect great food and drinks. Whether your guests are old friends and family, or total strangers, your food and drink choices will give them something to talk about. Here are some ideas:

  • Fingers foods are a classic that can be given a modern twist. They go great with cocktails. They are great for large or small gatherings. They can also be homemade or purchased from a deli, caterer or grocery store. A cheese and cracker platter is a good centrepiece. Add olives, red pepper jelly and sweet pickles to spice things up. Mini sandwiches and pizzas are classic standbys and sushi is a fun favorite.
  • For a more formal, sit-down meal you have many options, so get creative. You can have the event catered, or pretend you have your very own cooking show. Try a theme, such as food from a particular region of the world, or food grown locally. Also, try interesting wine pairings and if you can get it, a local craft beer. If you are doing a brunch try making mimosas as a fun drink.

The most important things are: plan ahead, make your home look just the way you would like it to, add your own personal touches, and have fun!
