Protecting Your Floor

With the holidays quickly approaching, you are most likely preparing your home to host parties and family get-togethers.

It’s a beautiful time of year to spend with loved ones. The last thing on your mind should be the condition of your floors once your guests are gone.  With these simple tips and tricks you can easily protect your floors during parties and after the holidays too!

Tip 1: Felt Pads Under Tables or Chairs

Moving furniture to accommodate your guests is common for parties; make sure your tables and chairs don’t scratch your floor by placing felt under the legs. Sticky felt pieces can be found at most hardware stores and can be cut to the right size for your furniture so it is completely unnoticeable. This will save you a lot of headaches when you see your guests push chairs in and out at your next get-together.

Tip 2: Indoor Shoes Only

Some homeowners prefer to have inside shoes or no shoes at all in their houses. When inviting your guests to your party, make sure you outline what your shoe policy is. By asking your guests to bring indoor shoes or slippers you can prevent grit and other dirt entering your home. High heels on your floors should be avoided at all costs because the heels can damage the floor. By letting your guests know what kind of footwear to bring, you’re making sure there is no confusion on the day of your party.

Tip 3: Maintenance Equals Longevity

With a wood floor especially, you will need to maintain the floor to make sure it lasts for many years to come. By sanding and re-finishing it every few years you’ll ensure the flooring stays in good shape. A well-maintained floor will be less susceptible to cracks, stains and other nuisances. When maintaining your floors always keep in mind the products that you use and make sure your floor cleaners or finishes do not create a buildup of chemicals that can cause more harm than good.

Tip 4: A Decorative Mat or Floor Runner

A beautiful home fully decorated for a party, holiday or otherwise, is a magical thing. When creating the ambiance for a party, consider some strategically placed rugs or floor runners in potential “high spill” locations. These decorative pieces can look great while remaining functional in keeping your floors protected from gesticulating guests with drinks in their hands or overzealous dippers prone to spilling.

Protect Your Floors During Party Season

Protecting your floors doesn’t mean taking the holiday cheer out of your party; with some planning you can make sure that your floors make it through the holidays without sustaining damage.
