baby's room flooring

When planning your baby’s nursery, things such as the crib, paint color and changing table come to mind. Not much attention is paid to the flooring. But making sure your baby’s room has the right flooring can make a huge difference in their development. Some things to consider when choosing flooring for a nursery include how easy the floor is to clean, what kind of materials go into the production and how durable the floor actually is.

When it comes to your baby, providing the best flooring possible should always be the priority.

Wood Flooring

One of the standards in the flooring industry is hardwood. Known for being strong, durable and easy to clean, hardwood is a great option for a baby’s first room because of its durability and the fact that it does not absorb allergens or chemicals.

If you decide to go with a hardwood floor, make sure you include an area rug for when your little one gets to the crawling stages. Hardwood is called that because it’s hard and could potentially cause some bumps and bruises for someone just learning how to walk!

Cork and Bamboo Floors

For the eco-friendly parents out there, cork and bamboo offer a unique alternative to hardwood. For the most part, cork and bamboo are offered in as many colors and finishes as hardwood, but at a lower cost and are generally better for the environment due to the sustainability of the materials.

One thing to consider when installing cork flooring is that the porous nature of the material can make it harder to clean and is more likely to trap harmful allergens, dust and mold in the crevices.

Carpet

For an extra-cozy baby’s nursery, carpet is still a popular choice. However, carpeting can easily trap allergens, dust and mold and is much more difficult to clean. To make sure your carpet is as clean as it can be for your baby, regular vacuuming needs to happen to ensure the dust and mold is removed.

Another risk to carpet is the harmful VOC’s or, volatile organic compounds that are emitted from it. If wall-to-wall carpeting is the route you choose to take, make sure you choose a carpet with a low VOC option. Often, synthetic carpets carry fewer VOC’s than natural carpets, but you should still make sure the carpet is installed properly before your little one arrives to be positive that the carpet has had sufficient time to air out.

Homeownership is About Choice

Buying a home and raising a family are very similar. People around you will be quick to offer opinions, tips and tricks. But the truth is, when it comes to raising a family, or even choosing the right flooring for your baby’s nursery, the best answer is the one that’s right for you. The option that makes the most sense for your lifestyle, budget and aesthetic is the option you should choose.
