Family Game Night

In today's world of mesmerizing gadgets, it's easy to forget how good the simple things in life can be. A fun night at home with the family, playing games and sharing some laughs, is always a great reminder. Here are five games that are fun for kids of all ages, because some things never get old.

1. Charades

If you watch a lot of movies or TV and have some good actors in the family, this one is great. Make two teams. Come up with a fun team name. Decide on hand signals that will tell everyone if it's a movie, a TV show, or a famous person, and how many syllables are in the title. One member from a team goes first, acting out the scene in three minutes or less without any talking. Use a phone or egg timer to keep track of time. If team A does not guess it right then the team B can try to guess for the point. Now, it's team B's turn.

2. Hum-a-Tune

This one is more challenging than it sounds! Make two teams and choose a member to go first. They have to hum or whistle a tune to a popular song, and members from both teams try to guess which song it is to get a point. Everyone can work together to make a long list of tunes, if you like, but make sure there are enough songs on the list to keep it challenging.

3. Monster Jam

This is a drawing game, but you don't need to be a great artist to create a great monster.

Take one piece of 8.5x11 paper for each player and fold it into 3 sections. Unfold the paper and on one  side use a pencil to lightly write 'head' in the top fold, 'body' in the middle area, and 'legs' in the last section. Fold each of the papers again so that you can only see the 'head' sections. Now, everyone draws a monster head with the neck ending in the centre of the area where the fold is. When your head is finished, fold the paper again so you can only see the 'body' section and pass the paper to the person beside you. Now draw a funny monster body (no peaking at the head). Fold the paper so that you can only see the 'legs' section and pass it on. When all 3 sections are complete, unfold and enjoy your masterpieces!

4. Memory

Almost everyone has a deck of cards hidden in a drawer. Memory is a simple card game that is good for the brain. Lay all of the cards face down in a grid. There are 52 cards in a deck so you can go 13 cards down and four across. Each person takes a turn flipping two cards over and tries to find a matching pair. If you find two matching cards you keep them and if you don't, turn them face down again. Try to remember where all the cards are. The person to get the most matches wins!

5. Story Jam

Once upon a time.....We all know how every great story starts. Each person tells one line of the story, and then it’s the next person's turn. To help move the story along you can remember this formula: in every story there is at least one character. Sometimes there are a few.  Something exciting happens, and then something else exciting happens, and then something else exciting happens, until one day..... the story ends on a positive note. The story can be told out loud, or you can each write a sentence and pass it on. The story can be kept going for a long time or you can keep it short. Just, don't forget the happily ever after!
