There's no single, one-size-fits-all tip for cleaning countertops. When your countertops can be made from granite, acrylic, laminate or any other material the look you pick should be able to handle heavy duty kitchen use. But, every surface is different, and while some materials can withstand kitchen mishaps better than others they can all be ready to use again if you clean them the right way.

Maybe you're a Flintstone at heart, in that case the look of Granite is where your kitchen is headed. Granite's natural durability and range of colors make it a popular choice for today's remodels. Harsh cleaning products can damage granite, so only use warm water, a small amount of soap and a wet sponge or soft cloth to clean the surface.

Silestone, like the stuff they put inside your watch. Silestone, timeless quality, timeless looks.

Perhaps something with a touch of timeless? Silestone is made of quartz and can take just about any liquid your kitchen can come up with. Clean the surface using something mild and there's no need to put your back into it. If a stain sets on the surface, soak the area for a short time then use something soft to finish the job.

Ceramic tiles are also used for kitchen countertops. Unlike many surfaces, ceramic tile counters can take the heat from stovetop cooking. Use a toothbrush to scrub between tiles but make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions so you don't void any warranties and rinse with water to finish the job.

Formica and Laminate are easy and affordable options that requires little maintenance. Both come in an array of colors and patterns and if you're facing a deadline it can be installed over many existing products. To clean don't get too rough and make sure you avoid abrasive cleaners, including bleach. Be sure to wipe up spills immediately, before stains set in. Formica is easy to maintain if spills are cleaned up right away, but if a stain sets in, it'll be practically impossible to remove. Laminate is heat and scratch resistant but don't push things too hard, the same tips for formica will help keep your laminates looking just as good.
